The Eastern Heartland is set to come alive with football excitement as the maiden edition of the Imo Unity Cup 2026, powered by innovative global fintech company One-Dosh, kicks off on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Mini Stadium, Owerri.

More than just a football competition, the Imo Unity Cup is a bold initiative aimed at discovering hidden football talents, promoting unity among tertiary institutions and empowering young people through sports.

Speaking on the company's partnership with the competition, One-Dosh Marketing Lead, Miss Cindy Ogba, described the sponsorship as a natural extension of the company's vision of creating opportunities and connecting people beyond geographical boundaries.

The Coordinator of the Imo Unity Cup, Engr Ugochukwu Egbunine, said One-Dosh was motivated to sponsor the championship because of its commitment to youth development and community impact.

Providing details of the tournament, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. GOC Nwadike, disclosed that eight tertiary institutions will compete for honours in what promises to be one of the biggest inter-tertiary football competitions in the state.

Participating institutions include Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Imo State University (IMSU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State Polytechnic, Omuma, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University (KOMU), Ideato, and the Federal College of Land Resources Technology (FECOLET), Owerri.

The opening fixture will see Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education face University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES) on Wednesday, July 1, at 2:00 p.m. at the Alvan Mini Stadium.

Other first-round fixtures are:

July 2: IMSU vs. KOMU

July 3: FUTO vs. Imo Polytechnic

July 4: FECOLET vs. Federal Polytechnic Nekede

The winners of Matches A and C will clash in one semifinal, while the winners of Matches B and D will contest the second semifinal before the grand finale on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

The champions will receive ₦1 million, while the runners-up and third-place teams will earn ₦750,000 and ₦500,000 respectively.

Individual excellence will also be rewarded, with ₦100,000 each for the Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper of the competition.
