Owerri Agog As Dan Anyiam U-15 Memorial Tournament Kicks Off In Grand Style

The ancient city of Owerri was agog on Saturday as the maiden edition of the Late Dan Anyiam U-15 Memorial Football Tournament kicked off in grand style at the Old Township Stadium, Tetlow Road.

The tournament, sponsored by Mr Anderson “WorldBest” Anyiam, CEO of WorldBest Pharmaceuticals, is designed to honour the memory of the late Dan Anyiam while providing a platform for young football talents to be discovered, nurtured and exposed to greater opportunities.

The colourful opening ceremony, which attracted football enthusiasts, dignitaries, participating teams and supporters, was officially declared open by the Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, amidst excitement and fanfare.

The opening fixture lived up to expectations, with Sunny Football Academy defeating Jahrule Football Academy 2-0 to set the tone for what promises to be a highly competitive championship.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Onyeocha commended the tournament donor, Mr Anderson Anyiam, for investing in youth development through football.

“This is a very good initiative because it is about investing in our youths and discovering talents. It is in line with the policy of His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, to promote youth development and sports in Imo State,” Onyeocha stated.

The Commissioner further urged the participating players and teams to maintain discipline and good conduct throughout the competition, stressing that the tournament could serve as a launchpad for future football stars.

“I want the players to conduct themselves very well. Some of the talents that will be discovered here today may become great stars in the nearest future,” he added.

The tournament now moves into another exciting phase as Campus Football Academy confronts Obiowere Football Academy in the second Group A encounter today at the Old Township Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00pm.

With the impressive start and the quality of young talents on display, the Dan Anyiam U-15 Memorial Tournament has already announced its arrival as a promising grassroots football platform in Imo State.
