Nigeria's drive to rebuild football from the grassroots has received a massive boost with the official launch of the maiden edition of the First-Bank Samuel Okwaraji U-16 Secondary Schools Football Championship, a landmark national initiative aimed at discovering young talents while immortalizing one of the country's greatest football heroes, the late Samuel Okwaraji.

Powered by First-Bank Nigeria Plc in conjunction with the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, National Sports Commission (NSC), Nigerian School Sports Federation, National Institute for Sports (NIS), Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), the championship represents a bold commitment to restoring the culture of school sports and creating a sustainable pathway for future football stars.

The nationwide tournament, unveiled at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, has been described by stakeholders as one of the most significant grassroots football projects in recent years, with the potential to transform secondary school football across the country.

Speaking during the unveiling, the Secretary-General of the National Organising Committee (NOC), Achunwa Chidozie, said the championship is far more than a football competition.

According to him, it is a national movement designed to preserve the enduring legacy of Samuel Okwaraji—the patriotic Super Eagles midfielder who tragically passed away while representing Nigeria during a FIFA World Cup qualifying match on August 12, 1989.

He praised the family of the late football icon from Umudioka in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State for producing a player whose sacrifice and commitment to national service continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.

Chidozie also acknowledged the support of the National Assembly Committees on Sports Development, the Imo State Government under Governor Hope Uzodimma, First bank Nigeria Plc and other partners whose collaboration has brought the dream to reality.

Beyond identifying football talents, the championship is designed to instill the virtues that defined Okwaraji's remarkable life—patriotism, discipline, courage, academic excellence, selflessness and leadership.

The competition will provide thousands of secondary school students with opportunities to showcase their abilities before scouts, benefit from coaching and mentorship programmes, compete for educational opportunities and develop into responsible ambassadors of Nigeria.

The tournament equally seeks to revive school sports nationwide, strengthen grassroots football structures and create a reliable talent pipeline for clubs and Nigeria's national teams.

Northern state preliminaries commenced on June 26, while the Southern Conference officially kicks off on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, beginning with state qualifying competitions before progressing through zonal championships to the national finals.

State champions will earn the right to represent their states at the National Championship in Abuja before the grand finale takes centre stage in Imo State, the home of the late Samuel Okwaraji.

Representing the Imo State Commissioner for Sports, GOC Nwadike reaffirmed the state's readiness to host a memorable championship worthy of the legendary midfielder's legacy, emphasizing that Imo remains proud to celebrate one of Nigeria's greatest football patriots.

With the combined support of First bank, the National Sports Commission, National Institute for Sports, Nigeria Football Federation, SWAN and other strategic partners, the Samuel Okwaraji U-16 Schools Football Championship is poised to become Nigeria's foremost platform for grassroots football development.

As the first whistle draws near, expectations are high that the championship will not only unearth the next generation of Super Eagles stars but also nurture young Nigerians who embody the values Samuel Okwaraji stood for—service, excellence, discipline and unwavering patriotism.

Nearly four decades after his heroic sacrifice, Samuel Okwaraji's legacy continues to inspire a nation, proving that true greatness is measured not only by talent on the pitch but by an enduring commitment to country and humanity.
