Enyimba Gaffer, Eguma Dedicates Insurance Victory to Gov Otti, Late Mum
Enyimba FC Coach, Stanley Eguma has dedicated the People's Elephant win over Bendel Insurance FC in the league to Governor Alex Otti and his late mother who passed on to eternal glory recently.
The Nigerian giants under the watchful eyes of the State's number one citizen maintained their unbeaten run in the NPFL league with a come back win over the Benin Arsenal on Sunday at the Enyimba Int'l Stadium, Aba.
The seasoned tactician who was quick to acknowledge that the team is still a work in progress told Enyimba Media that the victory is for the very supportive Governor and for the memory of his mum who passed on few days to the encounter.
Enyimba were rattled by an early lead in the 3rd minute when Chinedu Nwosu reacted quick to nod home of their second conner but Joseph Abiodun scored his second league goal in 4 games stopping low to nod home the equalizer off Mohammed Hussani's brilliant free kick that cannond off the post.
The visitors took the initiative again early in the second half when Wisdom Udoh reacted most inside the box after keeper Kelvin Ogunga parried from the spot in the 59th minute but again, the People's Elephant reacted to win a penalty as captain, Kalu Nweke converted from their spot for his second goal in two games after Mujeeb Odufeso was brought down inside the box, just as new kid in the block, Chidera Michael continued his fine run at the 69th minute keeping his cool inside the box to slot home the winning goal after a beautiful exchange of passes between Enyimba front liners.
Eguma in his post match comments commended his boys for reacting on time after being pegged back by the fast and sleeky young Insurance players. He also acknowledged that the Benin side deserved respect for their business approach to the game noting that he anticipated a tough match given that both teams are traditional sides that hold decent rivalry.
"Yeah it was a tough one and I commend my players for responding well to get the victory. The rivalry between Enyimba FC and Insurance FC has always been there.
"They are both traditional sides and they gave us a scare right from three minutes into the game but my boys showed character in coming back twice and going ahead for the victory.
"I think we showed maturity today and like they say in Enyimba, 'never say die'. But I won't undermine the away side, they were fast, young and business like, such team deserves to be respected in the league.
"We are happy to be on top of the log but the job is not done yet as we still need a lot of work to be done. We need all the support we can get and the Governor has demonstrated that with his presence and gifts today, so I urge everyone to keep faith with us as we will continue to work on having a good season.
Bendel Insurance coach, Greg Ikhanoba admitted his side lost concentration, which allowed Enyimba to punish them with the second and third goals.
“Of course, Enyimba are a good, tough side. They are number one in Nigeria and among the best clubs in Africa. We lost the match, but we must correct our lapses before the next league fixture,” Ikhanoba said.
Enyimba FC with the victory maintains their top spot on the log with 11 points and will next be in action on Sunday in one of the match day Six games against Ikorodu City FC in Lagos.
