Imo @ 50: Amb Ogbonna Salutes Uzodimma as Unity Takes Centre Stage in Jubilee Novelty Clash

 

The Golden Jubilee celebration of Imo State came alive in colour, camaraderie and competition on Friday as football once again proved its power as a unifying force, with the Imo State House of Assembly locking horns with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in a novelty match at the iconic Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

Chairman of the Imo State Sports Commission, Hon. Prince Eleazar Onyewuchi Ogbonna FINCA, hailed Governor Hope Uzodimma for what he described as “visionary leadership, administrative dexterity and uncommon unifying spirit” that made the historic event possible.

Amb. Ogbonna, who spoke after the highly entertaining encounter, praised the Governor for creating an enabling atmosphere of peace, cohesion and purposeful governance, noting that the novelty game perfectly captured the essence of Imo at 50 unity, progress and shared identity.

“Governor Uzodimma has shown that leadership is not just about policies but about bringing people together,” Ogbonna said.

“What we witnessed today goes beyond football. It is a clear statement of unity, peace and the Spartan spirit of Ndi Imo.”

The former Italian Serie A player and international business mogul also commended members of the Imo State House of Assembly and ALGON chairmen for their enthusiasm, skill and sportsmanship, describing their display as a true reflection of the resilient and competitive nature of Imolites.

According to him, the novelty match not only added glamour to the Golden Jubilee celebration but also reinforced the importance of sports as a tool for healthy living, bonding and stress relief among public office holders.

“This friendly match brought excitement, laughter and fitness together. It shows that our lawmakers and local government chairmen can lead from the front, both in governance and in promoting a healthy lifestyle,” he added.

Amb Ogbonna echoed the words of Governor Uzodimma, who had earlier described the match as more than just a game, but a symbolic celebration of unity and fifty years of Imo State’s journey. The Governor noted that the electrifying cheers, friendly rivalry and shared joy at the Dan Anyiam Stadium reflected the collective spirit of the Jubilee.

In a thrilling contest filled with applause, banter and flashes of skill, Team ALGON eventually emerged victorious, adding extra sparkle to an already memorable day.

As Imo State continues its Golden Jubilee celebrations, Amb. Ogbonna reaffirmed the commitment of the Imo State Sports Commission to leveraging sports as a catalyst for unity, youth empowerment and sustainable development values he said Governor Uzodimma has consistently championed.

At 50, Imo State didn’t just celebrate its history; it celebrated its togetherness  and football once again told the story best.
