Two persons have reportedly died, while several others sustained serious injuries in a ghastly auto crash involving members of Great All Stars Football Club of Nekede, Owerri, Imo State.

The accident reportedly occurred along Nekede Road, near the zoo, as the footballers were returning from a friendly match against All Stars Football Club of Avu in Owerri West Local Government Area on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The club's Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Uchendu, who spoke to our sports correspondent at a private hospital in Owerri where the victims were rushed for treatment, disclosed that Great All Stars had played a friendly encounter against their Avu counterparts, losing the match by three goals to two.

According to him, tragedy struck on their way home when the front tyre of the Lexus RX SUV conveying some of the footballers reportedly came off while the vehicle was in motion, causing it to somersault more than five times.

One of the accident victims, Mr Chuks Uneze, disclosed that the club's Media Officer died at the scene, while another member reportedly died hours after the incident.

Uneze, who is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash, further revealed that the club's Chairman, Mr Richard Unaeze, was in critical condition and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Owerri.

He appealed to supporters and well-wishers of the club to pray for the recovery of the injured members and divine intervention in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The incident has cast a shadow over the club and its supporters, with several members reportedly battling serious injuries.

It would be recalled that Great All Stars Football Club participated in an All Stars football tournament held at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, a few months ago.
