ENYIMBA LEGENDS CROWN KANU: Ex-Stars Unveil Club Chairman As Patron, Set To Honour Him With Special Award

The timeless adage that a golden fish has no hiding place came alive on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, when the Enyimba FC Legends sprang a pleasant surprise on the Chairman of Nigeria’s most successful club, Ambassador Nwankwo Kanu, unveiling him as their Patron.

The brief but colourful ceremony took place at the main bowl of the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, fondly known as the Elephant Park where the club’s illustrious ex-players converged to celebrate one of Africa’s most decorated football icons.

Led by former Super Eagles defender and current Sporting Director of Abia Warriors, Emeka Ifejiagwa, the Enyimba Legends formally unveiled the former Arsenal striker, noting that by virtue of his position as Chairman of Enyimba FC their beloved former club, the legendary Kanu Nwankwo fittingly assumes the role of Patron.

Speaking during the short ceremony, Ifejiagwa disclosed that the Legends have also officially invited Ambassador Kanu as Special Guest to their novelty match slated for Monday, January 12, at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba. 

He further revealed that arrangements have been concluded to honour the football icon with a Special Award later that evening at Terminus Hotel, Aba, in recognition of his immense and enduring contributions to football development in Abia State and Nigeria at large.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the Enyimba Legends jersey to Ambassador Nwankwo Kanu, followed by a group photograph that captured a historic reunion of club greats. 

Present at the unveiling were renowned Enyimba legends including Emeka Ifejiagwa, Obinna Nwanneri, Uche Okechukwu, King Joe-Akuma, Chidozie Johnson, Ikechi Okoro, Emeka Obi, Coach Nkuruma, Paul Arua, Ike Mba, among others.

The event once again underlined Kanu Nwankwo’s towering legacy not just as a global football icon, but as a visionary leader whose influence continues to inspire generations within the Enyimba family and beyond.
