NPFL U-19 Youth League: Junior Elephants Tame Rivers UTD Jnrs

Enyimba U19 reignited their NPFL U19 League campaign with a disciplined 2-0 win over Rivers United U19 at the Isiala Ngwa Stadium, showing composure and quality in key moments.

Coming off a 3-2 defeat to Lobi Stars U19 in their opening fixture, the Young Elephants approached the match with urgency. They started strongly, creating early chances — in the 4th minute, Kelechi Mba’s header forced a sharp save from the Rivers United goalkeeper, and in the 10th minute, Peter Daniel fired straight at the keeper from a promising position.

The first half remained evenly contested, with both teams battling for midfield control. Enyimba’s defensive organization stood out, while goalkeeper Eze Mathew dealt confidently with any threats from Rivers United.

The deadlock was broken in the 66th minute. A long free kick from Chimela was parried by the Rivers United goalkeeper, and Emmanuel Chinedu reacted quickest to slot home the rebound, giving Enyimba the lead.

Rivers United tried to respond, but Enyimba’s defense remained firm. Eze Mathew produced a vital fingertip save to preserve the advantage.

The second goal arrived in the 80th minute through a moment of brilliance from Nelson Sule. Positioned just outside the penalty area, he met a loose ball with a precise volley that flew past the goalkeeper to seal the win.

Enyimba saw out the remainder of the match with composure, controlling possession and limiting Rivers United to half chances.

This result keeps Enyimba U19’s hopes alive in Group B, setting up a crucial next fixture against Rangers U19 as the race for knockout qualification continues.
