Imo Sports Commission Moves to Attract Envid Int'l School, Deepens Sports-Education Drive

The Imo State Sports Commission through the ever hard working and industrious Chairman, Prince (Sir) Eleazar Onyewuchi Ogbonna FINCA, has intensified efforts to complement the state Government's drive for academic excellence and youth development by initiating the move to establish a major presence of Envid International School in Imo State.

The initiative, which is being pursued through a landmark partnership involving Envid International School, Imo State Sports Commission, the Global Institute of Sports and Talent Hunt Academy FC Owerri is expected to usher in a new era in the integration of education and sports development in the state.

The move is part of the broader vision of the Imo State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, the Governor of Imo State, Dist. Sen. Hope Odidika Uzodimma, “Onwa Oyoko,” to create opportunities for young Imolites to acquire quality education, develop their talents and become productive citizens capable of competing favourably on the global stage.

The Sports Commission Chairman, Prince Sir Ogbonna, who has been championing initiatives aimed at repositioning sports and youth development in the state, described the proposed partnership as a strategic investment in the future of Imo youths.

According to him, the initiative goes beyond football, as it seeks to create a sustainable platform where young people can pursue academic excellence and sporting excellence simultaneously.

“Our vision is to give the children of Imo State the opportunity to succeed both in the classroom and on the sporting field. We do not want a situation where a young athlete has to sacrifice education in order to pursue his or her sporting dream. This partnership is designed to ensure that both can thrive together,” Ogbonna stated.

Envid International School, a private co-educational institution renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, child-centred learning and youth development, is expected to bring its academic expertise and modern educational model to the partnership.

On its part, Talent Hunt Academy FC Owerri will provide a strong grassroots football structure, scouting network and talent identification platform, while the Global Institute of Sports is expected to contribute international technical expertise, coaching standards and pathways for talented young athletes to access legitimate opportunities beyond Nigeria.

At the heart of the proposed initiative is the establishment of a modern sports-education model in which formal education is integrated with elite football development.

The programme is expected to feature a state-endorsed football academy, structured talent identification and scouting systems, modern training facilities, performance programmes, sports science and coaching systems benchmarked against international standards.

Young athletes will also benefit from technical and tactical training, physical conditioning, sports psychology, character development and personal mentorship.

For Ogbonna, this holistic approach is critical if Imo State is to produce not only professional athletes but also educated, disciplined and responsible future leaders.

“Talent without education can be limiting, just as education without an opportunity to develop one's talent can leave enormous potential untapped. What we are building is a bridge between the two,” the Chairman explained.

“Our young people deserve an environment where they can dream, learn, train and compete. If a child has the talent to become a professional footballer, we should provide the structure to nurture that talent while ensuring that his or her education and welfare are never compromised.”

The proposed partnership is also expected to have far reaching implications for the state’s sporting ecosystem.

Apart from creating a flagship football education centre in Owerri, the initiative could provide increased access to quality training for young athletes across the state, create employment opportunities for coaches, educators and sports professionals, and attract new investments and international collaborations.

It is equally expected to strengthen Imo’s position as one of Nigeria’s emerging centres for sports talent development.

The Sports Commission boss believes the initiative will complement the Governor Uzodimma administration's investments in sports infrastructure and human capital development.

“The vision of His Excellency, our Governor, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma, is about building a prosperous future for Imo people, and sports and education are very important components of that vision. Our responsibility at the Sports Commission is to identify opportunities that can translate that vision into tangible benefits for our youths,” Ogbonna said.

Another major attraction of the partnership is the international exposure expected to be available to outstanding athletes through the Global Institute of Sports and its network.

Top performing players could gain access to verified club trials, exposure programmes and potential opportunities with professional clubs outside Nigeria, subject to applicable regulations and safeguarding requirements.

Prince Ogbonna described the international component as a major opportunity for Imo’s sporting talents.

“We have extraordinarily talented young people in Imo. What has sometimes been lacking is the right structure, exposure and pathway. This partnership has the potential to connect our talents with credible international opportunities while keeping their education, welfare and safety at the centre of the process,” he said.

He stressed that the Sports Commission would continue to support initiatives that provide genuine opportunities for young athletes rather than exposing them to unregulated or exploitative arrangements.

The Chairman further described the proposed arrival of Envid International School as an investment whose benefits could extend well beyond football.

“When you invest in a child, you are investing in the future of a family, a community and the state. We want Imo to be known not only for producing footballers, but for producing well educated, disciplined and globally competitive young men and women,” Ogbonna declared.

He expressed optimism that the partnership would encourage more private sector participation in sports and education while opening new avenues for collaboration between government, schools, sports academies and international organisations.

The initiative, when fully operational, is therefore expected to provide a new model for youth development in Imo State, one that places education, sports, welfare, character and global exposure on the same pedestal.
