Enyimba Bows Out of Federation Cup After Penalty Shootout Heartbreak

Enyimba FC's quest for President Federation Cup glory came to an end on Saturday as the People's Elephant suffered a penalty shootout defeat to fellow Nigeria Premier Football League side, Ikorodu City FC, following a fiercely contested Round of 16 encounter that ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The nine time Nigerian league champions appeared on course for qualification after taking the lead in the 25th minute through Jacob Jonathan, who calmly finished to give Enyimba a deserved advantage in a game disrupted at intervals by heavy rainfall.

Enyimba maintained control for large spells of the contest and created several opportunities to extend their lead. One of the best chances fell to substitute Okechukwu Samuel, who came on for goalscorer Jonathan and was presented with a golden opportunity after Ikorodu City goalkeeper parried a powerful effort from Joel Ezra. However, the forward was unable to convert from close range.

The Aba giants were also left frustrated by a number of contentious refereeing decisions. Enyimba players and officials strongly appealed for penalties after incidents involving Agu Samuel and Okechukwu Samuel inside the opposition penalty area. Despite claims of infringement by Ikorodu City defenders, the appeals were waved away, with the referee only awarding a free kick for one of the incidents just outside the box.

With victory seemingly within reach, Enyimba suffered a late setback seven minutes from full time when an unfortunate goalkeeping error allowed Ikorodu City to draw level and force the game into a penalty shootout.

The ensuing spot kick contest proved dramatic. Enyimba at one stage looked poised to seal qualification but failed to capitalize on their advantage, allowing the Lagos based side back into the contest. After a tense sequence of 12 kicks, Ikorodu City emerged victorious 4-3 on penalties, ending Enyimba's campaign in this year's competition.

Despite the disappointment, Enyimba can take encouragement from the fighting spirit displayed throughout the encounter. The People's Elephant showed determination, created the better opportunities for much of the game, and were unfortunate not to secure victory within regulation time.

The result brings Enyimba's 2026 President Federation Cup journey to a close, but the club remains focused on the future.

 

Management, technical crew, players, and supporters will now use the off season period to reflect, rebuild, and strengthen ahead of the new campaign.
