Ogbonna Ignites Southeast Football Nostalgia: Imo Legends, Enugu All Stars Set To Honour Late ‘Chairman’ Chukwu In Explosive Novelty Clash
In what promises to be an emotional, electrifying, and historic celebration of Nigeria’s rich football heritage, the Chairman of the Imo State Sports Commission, Hon Sir (Amb) Eleazer Onyewuchi Ogbonna, has taken a monumental step by sponsoring a novelty football match in honour of late football icon, Chairman Christian Chukwu.
Scheduled to kick off at 3pm on Saturday, August 9th, 2025, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, the match will pit Imo Football Legends against Enugu Selected All Stars in a sizzling contest designed to pay tribute to one of Nigeria’s greatest-ever football personalities.
Speaking through his media team, Amb. Ogbonna described Christian Chukwu as a "national treasure" whose life, career, and enduring contributions to Nigerian football can never be forgotten. “He was a true ambassador of the game,” Ogbonna stated, “as a player, a captain, and a coach. The legacy of the ‘Chairman’ must live on.”
The symbolic gesture, according to Ogbonna, also reflects the vision of Governor Hope Uzodimma's Shared Prosperity and 3R Agenda, which aims to celebrate excellence, promote unity, and rekindle pride in the state's sporting heroes. He further recalled the late Chukwu’s ties to the region, especially his stint as a Technical Consultant to Heartland FC.
Among the legends expected to grace the pitch are household names including Henry Nwosu, Casmir Mbachu, and Ramson Madu, with many more Southeast icons confirmed to thrill fans with flashes of their trademark magic.
*A Celebration Beyond Football*
This is more than just a game — it’s a cultural tribute, a reunion of greatness, and a spectacle of unity and nostalgia. Fans from across the Southeast and beyond are expected to storm Owerri for what many are already calling “the mother of all novelty games.”
Dan Anyiam Stadium is expected to erupt with emotion, applause, and football artistry as the legends lace up their boots one more time — not just to compete, but to honour a fallen general of the game.
Admission is FREE — All lovers of football, families, and fans of the beautiful game are cordially invited to witness history.
